As the camera switches on, an empty room comes into focus. It is strewn with seemingly random scientific equipment, file cabinets, reference books and reams of papers scattered across lab tables. A blur across the screen and a figure seats itself as a hand reaches towards the camera and adjusts its angle. Katja's heart-shaped face, brown shoulder-length hair and smirk come into view.
"Been an interesting day. I finally got to meet the infamous Dr. Grace Augustine. Lemme just say this: if a porcupine and a slinger ever had a child, it would be her. She is bristly, sarcastic, short-tempered and hair-trigger. With her tongue alone she can cut you and leave you bleeding. She is majestic." Katja's mouth twists in a wry grin. "My kinda woman. I know I'm gonna like her."
Suddenly the grin is gone. Katja's expression becomes serious. "It's a good thing, too. Because this place is no picnic. I am beginning to get the feeling there is tension between the RDA and their AVTR project managers. I'm told one thing by my CO here and another thing by Dr. Augustine's techs. Dr. Patel keeps his cards close to his vest, but it's clear whose side he's on. " She shakes her head slowly, her jaw visibly tightening. "Politics. Just like Earth. Even off-world, we can't get away from it."
She is not aware that the clenching muscles in her jaw indicate the direction of her thoughts. Her anger at the politics which deprived her of her family at the hands of a Chinese nuclear attack swells within her, pounding nails into her heart. It takes an effort to quell the feeling, get back to the video report. She closes her eyes, takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly.
"They tell us we'll be flying into the forest over the next few weeks for some up-close-and-personal time with the local fauna and flora. It's one thing to read about it, it's another to be in the middle of it. I'm looking forward to that."
"But what I'm REALLY looking forward to is meeting some real indigenous humanoids. Dr. Augustine won't let us get near them until we've learned more about the habitat, safety precautions and the Na'vi culture. Oh, yeah. And at least the basics of the language...enough to understand how NOT to get into trouble." Another wry grin.
"But trouble? That's my specialty."
Her grin fades quickly as the camera goes blank.
